How do you patent circuit designs?

Asked on Aug 13th, 2015 on Intellectual Property - California
More details to this question:
Circuit designs are easy to replicate but big corporations are able to patent. Such examples include the iPhone, Androids, and the nokia phone. Moreover, external usb chargers also has patents behind it but how do they do their patents? If I were to do a patent on a circuit design that I have, how would I be able to do it so it won't be taken by other people?

Update Your Profile
If you are truly talking about the circuit drawing, that is something that you would register as a copyright, and not patent. If, on the other hand, you really mean what a circuit does, that may be something for which can obtain a patent. You need to consult with an Intellectual Property Attorney who can advise you on your specific situation.
