More details to this question:
Say I was building a fan site/blog/etc, a place for fans to hang out on the internet, and I wanted to use the NHL Team Names.. would I be allowed to? I know that the names are Trademarked, but the fan site/blog/etc. will not charge money or even show ads on the site. So am I able to use the names of each NHL team name? With that am I allowed to use player names on those teams? If I do all this in a positive way, no charge, and designed for fans, will I run into any issues?

The short answer is some uses are ok and some are not, and how you use them is what controls.
We sell package called the Five Pillars of Protection that we can use to provide answers to your situation and provide you legal counseling on what is and is not fair use or trademark infringment. I'll be able to guide you through what's OK and what's not OK.
Looking forward to your reply.
