You are under no obligation to have anyone assist you in preparing your application. Most people hire a patent attorney or agent as a form of insurance to give their application the best possible chance of being approved by the examiner.

If the subject of the patent application is valuable, and based on your asking this question, the answer is yes. To the send question, if you don't know the answer, doing it yourself is likely to have bad consequences which would be difficult or impossible to reverse after you file it

You don't need an attorney - but it is generally wise to hire one. Patent work is very "rule specific" and violation of the rules can be fatal to your invention. Visit the US Patent Office website - www.uspto.gov - to search for attorneys in your city. Also search patents to see how they are constructed.
