Does the waiver for meeting in person for the K-1 visa apply if my girlfriend lives in Iran (as there is a travel ban to there)?

My girlfriend and I have been looking into ways for her to immigrate so we can get married here. There is typically a requirement for the K-1 visa that we must meet in person at least once within two years except in cases of extreme hardship or violation of customs. Would the cultural customs and travel ban constitute extreme hardship? Or would we need to find some way to coordinate meeting in some third country?

If there is a way for you to meet in a third country, then you should take that option. Otherwise, it is very likely that your K-1 visa will be denied. Remember, the physical meeting requirement can be anywhere in the world. Also to support your K-1 visa application, keep a record of all your chat communication logs, and take plenty of pictures when you meet her with family and/or friends and also all travel itinerary.
