Billed for commission paid 6 months after employment

worked in insurance sales as contrator. Quit 6 months ago. They are billing me for Commission paid on a policy that the customer cancelled last month . They say because the customer didn't keep it for a year. I live in NC

They may be able to recover it depending on what compensation agreement (pay policy or plan) was in place.
