Can I be fired for exploring other job options?

More details to this question:
I was working on a temp to hire job assignment, when I was contacted by a former employer about a job position. I mentioned to a co worker that I was considering taking the position if it was full time, they told the manager, and I was fired.

Unless you have a contract which provides otherwise, you can be fired for any reason not prohibitted by statute (e.g. race, religon, gender, etc.)  You can be fired for seeking another job.
