QUESTION

Can I get fired for thinking about going to college

Asked on Jan 02nd, 2014 on Wrongful Termination - North Carolina
More details to this question:
I previously worked at a pawn shop. I became interested in furthering my education. So i talked to an admissions advisor and obtained a copy of what my schedule would be like. I took it to my store manager and asked him if they would be able to work around those hours (M-Th 8-1) and IF they couldn't then I would postpone going back to school. A week later he told me that they were not able to work around my schedule and he terminated my employment. I then repeatedly told him that I was only asking to see what my options were and that I wasnt officially enrolled in which he told me that the decision was final. Now I am worried about losing my car, my home and having my child removed form her daycare.

North Carolina is an employment-at- will state and that  means an employee can be fired for any reason. This certainly seems unfair, but I do not see anything that suggests any claim against your former employer.
