Can I sign op for unemployment?

More details to this question:
I was informed by receptionist I was being placed on temporarily leave of absence and no reason was given. Couple of days later, receptionist called indicating owner of business wanted keys and credit card returned which I did. An employee told me the firm was having problems meeting payroll.

You can file for unemployment anytime you lose your job. In general, you will get unemployment benefits unless the employer shows you quit or were fired for misconduct.
