Can my boss lay me off via text message?

More details to this question:
On January 15, 2013 I received a text from my boss stating that because of business being slow, I was laid off immediately. Can he do this?

i am assuming that you are an 'employee-at-will' which means that you can be terminated for no reason.  you can be terminated via text message.
