I was born in NJ and lived there until moving to CA in 2004. The state of NJ claims I owe "overpaid unemployment" which is not true and was disputed back in 2004. I did not receive any information or hear anything since then. Today, I received my 2013 Federal income tax refund and it is missing $1,149 - which, after calling the TRO number provided on the IRS site, tells me was taken by the NJ Dept of Labor. I never received a notice that my refund would be offset, nor was I ever provided notice that this was even debt that was due. Can they legally take my money?
nj can take the irs taxes if they have given you proper notice and the opportunity for a hearing. nj often uses an old address which they have on their records. ed dimon, esq.
