I applied for a position in my county for a county job (Revenue Clerk). I was offered the position via phone would I accept over the phone? I accepted the position. Pay, benefits and start dates were discussed. She was to call me back the next day after she got in contact with Human Resources to see if I could start in the middle of the pay period. The next day I get a call from Human Resources telling me that they have rescinded the job offer, and offered me no explanation as to why, only told me that I will receive a letter in the mail. Was called and told they needed additional information so I returned to speak with county manager and Human Resource Director, and they did not ask for additional information they informed me that they were offering the position to someone else. Turns out the one that was hired was already a County employee at the DSS.
Unfortunately, I see no case at all here. The law allows the employer to rescind a job offer at any time. In fact, if you were actually hired, the county would have the right to fire you and replace you with the DSS employee as most county employees are employed "at will" meaning they can be fired at any time for any reason.
