Do I need to.pay for tools that break at work during to use not negligence?

More details to this question:
I work at a lawn maintenance company andoes they say if something breaks like a a tool I use or there is an accident that I'm responsible for paying them back, even though is not due to negligence, and the company has insurance for transportation and equipment, is this legal?

As long as (1) you don't have a contract providing otherwise; and (2) the payment for the tool would not bring your total wages for the week to an hourly rate of less than the minimum wage ($7.25/hour) for 40 hours of work, the employer can impose such a condition. I would guess (based on past experience with employers) that such an employer may have other problems --such as failing to pay you overtime pay for the time you work in excess of 40 hours in a 7 day work week. If that is the case, you may have a wage-hour issue, and, assuming the employer collects at least $500,000.00 per year in business, you could sue for that.   Michael A. Caldwell 404-979-3154
