I was recently passed up for a promotion by a less educated and designated male. I was told that I did very well on the interview. The new promotion went to the friend of the new director. I have not filed a case with the EEOC because I am not sure it is worth the extreme hassle and possibly bankruptcy . I am up against an insurance company with lots of money and lawyers. What is considered a good outcome? The next promotional opportunity won't be for 5-10 years down the road. The last 5/6 promotional jobs in my department went to males and 3 of those positions were once occupied by woman.
There is no cost to file a claim with the EEOC. However, it is unlikely that the claim would be successful if that is all the evidence you having supporting a sex discrimination claim. Also, employers are never happy to have an employee file an EEOC charge against them.
