Employment Question

Asked on May 21st, 2014 on Employment Contracts - Indiana
More details to this question:
At my current job in Indiana they are adding to the rule book that all employees have to report to the main office when they are arrested, get a DUI or anything else happens legally outside of work. Is this legal? This is simply a waitressing job, most legal matters including a DUI would not even affect my job.

Absent a contract or statute which prohibits a certain action (for example, by statute an employer can't discriminate against you based on your religion, or pay you less than the minimum wage set by the statute, or require you to work without safety equipment set by law), the employer can make such workplace rules as it desires.  For example, your employer can require you to wear a uniform, or to answer the work phone a certain way, or to have a college degree, regardless of whether you think it's silly or has no bearing on your job performance.
