QUESTION

How can I protect my job?

Asked on Apr 17th, 2014 on Labor and Employment - Idaho
More details to this question:
I take care of my best friend that had a massive stroke and sometimes miss work. I am only allowed to miss 3 days every 6 months. Work says I don' t qualify for f.m.l.a because he isn't family. I am his power of attorney. Is there anything legally I can do to protect my job?

You cannot miss work whenever you wish and protect your job. Instead, help your friend get In-Home Support Services, IHSS, and get professionals in round-the-clock and stay employed. FMLA would only work for a few weeks. Your friend needs professionals who can be there regularly and follow doctor's orders.

I know of no legal remedy available to you. Work is right, FMLA does not cover friends.

Yes, show up on time and don't take too many days off. Your employer has no obligation to help you take care of your friend. Your employer is paying you to do your job. If you don't want to do it for other reasons, that is not your employer's problem, it is yours.
