I was manager of a retail store. I have 3 bosses that live in other states. I was terminated for a failed inventory result. i had severe loss prevention and safety issues in the store through my almost 1year of employment. The inventory failed due to "hit and runs", groups would run in, grab thousands of dollars of merchandise from the front and run to their cars. They also started watching the store at night hiding and continued the hit and runs. I called security, police would come, incident reports filed, police reports filed, also stating approximate dollar amount losses. I asked numerous times for help from my bosses, phone and email. I gave prevention ideas and safety concerns., there was only 1 person usually running store alone. one boss wanted to help but the newly hired boss would not approve any help or prevention measures, even though I continued to complain, we were afraid for our safety,He would tell me to shut up and stop talking, avoiding.I have documented proof
North Carolina is an employment-at-will state which means you can be fired at any time for any reason. You can be fired for a good reason, a bad reason or no reason at all. You can only sue for wrongful firing if you can show the firing was due to unlawful discrimination or unlawful retaliation. This situation certainly seems unfair, but it does not appear to tbe due to either of the two unlawful motives listed above. However, I encourage you to consult with an experienced emploment attorney if there is more to this story and/or if you feel that either of these two motives were behind the firing.
