how do I sue my employer for retaliation

More details to this question:
I have been employeed by the same company 8 years. My ex boyfriend stole my keys in December. I did press charges and he was convicted. unforunatly in the process of of our legal case , he broke into my job several times and was caught on camera. As a result of that I got demoted at work. Not only did I get demoted but I was pulled by my employer into the dining room of my job while I was on the clock and in front of customers and other employees.

You can only sue your employer for retaliation if you engage in what is called a "protected activity" and then you are fired for it.  I do not see any protected activity mentioned in your post.
