I recently had a phone interview with HR the week before last. Then I was went in for an interview and it seemed to go very well with the interviewer ending the conversation with, "and please contact us if you get another offer so we can speed this process along - before you accept." I thought it was in the bag. It was working for the CEO of a division. Less than 24 hours I received a form letter. I wrote back to which both parties responded apologetically and said that they had a new candidate come forward who had worked there before. In 23 hours? I believe the CEO saw my resume and flat out refused because I was male, or over 50 or both. HR would not have had the time to interview the 1 or 2 people in the time given. They both offered to make time to speak with me in their apologies.
Age and gender discrimination in employment are very common, and illegal, but may be very difficult to prove. If you can prove there are no other employees who are male or over age 50 in the company in similar level positions to the one for which you were almost hired, you may have a case.
