I took an independent contractor position beginning January 2011 as general manager of a company with website and other advertising opportunities. I was to be paid $2,000 per month plus 20% commission. I never received any of the commissions and am owed $24,000. Now the company is trying to transition, I am no longer paid $2,000 per month and have been told there is no money to pay the commissions I earned. Do I have recourse to get the money I earned?
Without knowing the specifics of your contract or your relationship to the company in question, as a general matter, you always have recourse to get money owed to you under a valid contractual arrangement.
There can be other concerns, such as whether the defendant has the money to pay the judgment so that you can collect. That being said, if you have a valid contract and you did the work, then the company does owe the money to you and you have legal recourse to get a judgment against them.
