A co-worker at the shop decided to quit due to a disagreement with the owner. The next day, the owner asked me to de-friend this person on facebook. She asked me again the day after that, to which I politely denied her request, since it had nothing to do with work. The owner then called me off of work the next 2 days without explanation. On the 3rd day, I was called to the shop for a meeting with the owner. I was told at this time that I was too slow in performing my job duties, and was terminated on the spot. I only had 1 write up (over 2.5 years ago) for something totally unrelated. I believe I was not fired for anything other than not "de-friending" my former co-worker on facebook as the owner requested. I meet most of the qualifiers for unemployment benefits. However, I don't know if my former employer is considered covered employment or not. It's a small business. 18 workers. 2 that pay taxes. I was a tax paying employee. Do I qualify for unemployment compensation?
More than likely you qualify for unemployment benefits. There is no harm to apply. If you have difficulty receiving unemployment benefits, contact an attorney for representation as you were certainly terminated without just cause.
