Independent Contractor Violated Contract

Asked on Sep 11th, 2017 on Employment Contracts - New York
More details to this question:
I have a small business for licensed massage therapy. One of my licensed massage therapists (independent contractor) did not show up for work, an important office chair massage event where I lost over $428, plus missed scheduled appointments for emergency coverage. This massage therapist is under a signed contract that states they are financially responsible for all appointments if they do not give management 24 notice. This contractor did not respond to repeated attempts to contact them. Growing concerned that they may have had an accident for not showing up to work 2 days after this event, the police were called to check on them and found them alive and well. The contractor simply didn’t want to go into work, but didn’t give notice, contact management or respond to calls/emails. The contractor caused financial damage to my small business and I want to sue for the violation of contract. If this is something a lawyer can help me with, I also have other small business issues that

$428 is definitely small claims, so you do not need a lawyer.  Other issues may or may not require one.
