in my department we recently got a new team leader.he let it be known that he was upset with some things and called a meeting. apparently somebody mentioned that to somebody in another department that we were having a meeting. nothing specific was said about the meeting other than we were having a meeting.the team lead went on to say that he wasn't going to stand for that. that we were not to air our dirty laundry.I argued the point that telling somebody we're having a meeting with no specifics, doesn't constitute airing our dirty laundry. his response was that we are not to talk to anybody about any meetings and that if we didn't like it, "theres the door." implying that if we didn't like it, or did it again our jobs were at stake. I made the same argument and he again responded that he wasn't going to stand for that,and that if I didn't like it, there's the door. my issue is not that i walked out, but does he have the right to dictate what I can and cannot say.
No, you can say whatever you want to say. Of course, your employer has the right to fire you for what you say especially if you were told not to say something.
