QUESTION

Losing pay due to Manager mistake

Asked on Jan 24th, 2024 on Employment Contracts - Michigan
More details to this question:
Hi I'm seeking information about my rights under Michigan labor laws. Here's the situation: I work remotely from Michigan, but recently traveled to Brazil to introduce my baby to my family. Before making the trip, I asked my manager if it was okay to continue working from Brazil, and he agreed. Though we didn't have any written agreement, I do have screenshots of his confirmation. However, after my arrival in Brazil, my manager realized that he needed to get permission from HR before allowing me to work abroad. Now, I'm faced with a choice between losing pay or using my PTO hours to make up for my time in Brazil. This doesn't seem fair to me, considering that I acted in good faith by asking for permission and receiving confirmation from my manager. What are my rights as an employee? What options do I have in this situation? According to the employee handbook, getting approval from my manager was the first step, but now I'm not sure what to do next.

IT does not look like you have any strong options here. You can try to find a labor lawyer at michbar.org lawyer referral but I do not see a winnable case on these facts
