QUESTION

Not being paid

More details to this question:
Hello. Just a curious question. I recently got "hired" as a Chiropractor at a practice. I took it because I could find nothing else. I started there under a "3 month trial period" where I have been learning under the mentorship of the Doctor who owns the practice, unpaid. They have told me that they want me to come on permanently as they liked me through my trial period. That was 4 weeks ago when they told me this. I still have yet to sign a contract but would be doing so soon as they tell me I finally will be seeing patients soon. When I see patients, I will be recieving a 60 percent split of the profits i receive with my patients. I have been here now for over 3 months coming in anywhere from 25 to 55 hours per week without any pay despite the costs I have accrued in both gas and tollway tolls. Is all of this legal on the part of my employer? Thanks a ton, Jeff

If you are doing actual work for the chiropractor, as opposed to only training that might be required under the laws pertaining to your profession, then you should be getting paid for all of that time.  It might also depend on what the custom is in your profession.  You should definitely speak to an attorney to determine if you should pursue this matter further
