QUESTION

Unethical/illegal request from board member

Asked on Feb 07th, 2017 on Labor and Employment - Pennsylvania
More details to this question:
What should I do when an employee is asked to do something illegal? I work for a private college as head of the HR Dept. Our accountant was asked to "make the numbers look better" by a board member (and close friend of the school president). Both of us fear this being a he-said-she-said issue and will end with retaliation or termination.

Your college probably has a compliance officer or compliance hotline of some kind.  I think its required to have one.  See if you can find that. If so, you should be able file a complaint/register a concern annonymously about the matter. "make the numbers look better" could mean a lot of things and doesn't necessarily mean fraud, etc so be careful about saying something untrue about someone else.  That could be defamatory.
