What do I do to get unpaid wages as an independent contractor?

I worked for a transcription company. I live out of state. I turned in my first invoice on time, as instructed for August 2014 and I still have not received payment. I have since quit and I don't get replies to my e-mails about payment. I have found numerous complaints against this company for nonpayment or that it takes months to get paid and that is only after legal action is threatened. It is just a small amount but it is the principle of the matter that means the most to me.
