QUESTION

Wrongful termination

Asked on Mar 31st, 2013 on Wrongful Termination - North Carolina
More details to this question:
I was fired due to a statement made to an employee of " watch who you communicate with " I was told that I was downing the company, could I have a lawsuit case here?  Also the day before I was terminated, I was written up or being involved in "gossip" about another employee because during and investigation I didn't tell that I had mentioned the gossip to an employee, I was the only one written up and I heard other employees mention this same information and not get written up, is there a case here?

North Carolina is an employment-at-will jurisdiction.  You can be fired at any time for any reason.  The only time that you can successfully sue an employer for wrongful firing is if you can show that you were fired due to unlawful discrimination or unlawful retaliation.  It is important to focus on the word "unlawful" because most forms of discrimination and retaliation are lawful.  I do not see anything in your post that suggest the termination was unlawful.  However, you may want to consult with an experienced employment attorney just to be sure.
