QUESTION

Disputing a legal bill

Asked on Aug 18th, 2017 on Legal Malpractice - New York
More details to this question:
Hello We were charged a legal bill that was 4 times above what we were told it would be. We were also told by the firm that they would inform us when the retainer ran out and they never did. (The retainer ran out in one week). They "apologized" but said "it is what it is". I have this documented and recorded. Also, the legal advice they gave was misguided and we feel very cheated overall. What can I do to resolve this matter?

Dispute the bill in writing.  This is required.  Then, do not pay.  In NY, a lawyer must advise you of your right to arbitration before suing.  Do not do the arbitration, and defend the suit.  Most fee suits involve a counterlcaim for malpractice.
