I had oral surgery November 2, 2012 to remove several teeth. The doctor couldn't get me to go to sleep. He said he gave me the legal maximum dosage that he could but still I wouldn't go to sleep so they did the surgery with me awake. He rushed through it. My right arm became very sore and uncomfortable, barely able to move. I was feeling worse than what the doctor described as how it "normally" feels afterward. I went in for my check up today November 7, 2012. The dentist noticed immediately in shock and left the room. He came back a few minutes later and said I should go to the ER. He said he'd call the hospital. I went to the hospital. The doctor that saw me in the ER wouldn't answer my questions at all about anything. They said I had Deep Vein Thrombophlebitis. They gave me 5 shots of Lovenox to stick myself every 12 hours and told me to call my family doctor. I have medicaid.
A deep venous thrombosis can be caused by a number of factors. Slowed blood flow, damage to the blood vessels or inherited factors all can cause DVT's. From your description, it it appears that the DVT may have developed at the puncture site. This is a inherent risk. there may be some issue as to whether or not your doctor should have identified this sooner , but given the fact that you are now receiving appropriate treatment, it is questionable whether any delay would amount to actionable malpractice.
