Are you required to return a gift given to you?

More details to this question:
I was given a ring as a gift the friendship ended badly and the person is asking for the gist back. It WAS NOT an engagement ring or anything of that nature. It was a ring of my favorite sports team

Except in unusual circumstances (gifts given in contemplation of marriage, as you noted, or gifts given by a person who believed that he/she was dying at the time of the gift), gifts are irrevocable.
