QUESTION
Can a 22 year-old guy date a 17 year-old girl without getting charged?

More details to this question:
I am 22 she is 17 turning 18 in 8 months (October). We talk a lot (texting) about our future, her future what she believes what is her plan for her future etc. and we pretty much match up. I am interested on only going on dates with her I am not thinking on adding any sexual activities with her even after she turns 18. I need to know that person well before I think of making love with someone. I searched the internet for " 22 years old going out or going on a date with a 17 years old " but everybody says better not because of "sex". But my point is that there will not be sex between us. I said no to drugs before when I was between 13 to 17 years old. It will be easy if she wants to jump for that but she doesn't want sex either. So what do I do? Can I go on dates with her?

The age of majority in most states is 16. There is no outstanding law prohibiting a 22 year old dating a 17 year old. If her parents do not object, you may date her.

There is no law against the two of you dating. Sex with a minor is illegal, and just make sure that all of your communication is PG-13, too. You can be charged for explicit text messages even if you're not having sex. Sounds like you are being responsible about this, and I wish you the best. Make sure that you don't cross any boundaries over the next 8 months and you should be fine.

I need the details, and in particular if you, and she, live in Michigan. If you do it is legal to date, but that does not make it wise as 5 years, at your respective ages, is very significant.
