QUESTION

Can a person on low SSDI own a car?

Asked on Feb 09th, 2015 on Litigation - California
More details to this question:
She has no license. Does she have to get one to get insurance? She will be driven around and my friend drives the car. This SSDI lady is worried that if she has a car she will lose her SSDI. The friend may be getting a DUI. Basically we need to re assure her she is safe having this car. The info we have found has been obtuse. Thank you, she lives in the country and is older so being able to drive her around is important. Is it better if she or the friend own the car, the SSDI lady has to register it, and then insure it, correct? Thank you.

My understanding is that SSDI is not needs based but that SSI is. I see no problem. Check with the SSA to be sure.
