Can I really be charged with Larceny of a Controlled Substance?

More details to this question:
I am a nurse and I disposed of expired hydrocodone. I got fired but the Nursing Board found me completely innocent. I was doing my duties as a nurse. Someone told the police and without my knowledge that county charged me with Larceny of a Controlled Substance. Can they do that?
