Can I sue civilly for false accusations leading to imprisonment?

My fiance's mother was in an abusive relationship which landed her in the hospital from a beating, and finally left the relationship. Now the guy is calling the police making up charges and she has been taken to jail twice and having to spend more than she can afford on bond because of false accusations. Can she take him to court?
