I live and work in VA since June 1 2012. I was previously staying in temporary housing my company provided, On sept 29th i purchased a car in Colorado. The only permanent address I had to give the dealer was my mothers address in Wyoming. This was suppose to only be a mailing address for important documents to be sent. One of the things that I signed was a Wyoming certificate to title (so many car buying documents signed, that I didn't notice). This document, however, does not have a filled out "Branded Title/Salvage Disclosure" which it says every title applicant must fill out (I dont know if this voids the doc). Since Wyoming processed the Title because the dealer sent it to them, they (the DMV) are telling me that I MUST pay sales tax there. 1) I did not buy the car there. 2) I do not own or operate the car there (I live in VA with the car) 3) I have not been a Wyoming citizen since the end of May (i have pay stubs starting 1 june) Can I force them to release my title?
If you paid sales tax in Colorado, you will get a credit against what you owe to Wyoming. You could explain the mistake and ask them to send the paperwork to VA, but you would then owe the sales tax (really "use tax") to VA
