QUESTION

Can my girlfriend move out of her house before age 18?

Asked on Jun 05th, 2013 on Litigation - Nebraska
More details to this question:
Her mom doesn't really like me but my parents offered to allow her to move in because her mom can be abusive and very strict. So she wants to get out now it's a month away from her 18th birthday and she has a job, but her moms crazy and calls the cops if she tries leaving and tells them things like "my daughter is trying to kill herself can you please find her" so they just end up bringing her back home. So I was wandering is it legal for the mom to lie to the cops just to get her back home? And is she able to just leave now? She has siblings but she doesn't want them to get taken away from her mom because she doesn't really treat them the same way as her.

It is not legal for her to lie to the cops. It is a crime. However there is only a month left and she can then do whatever she wants.

The legal age of majority is 19 in Nebraska and there is no process here for emancipating a minor before their 19th birthday. If your girlfriend's mother is truly "abusive" and not just "very strict," your girlfriend or a concerned adult (perhaps your parents) can call the Child Abuse Hotline for Nebraska at 1-800-652-1999 and report it and the State may step in and help your girlfriend move towards independent living. The cost.benefit ratio is too poor to make the investment, have her wait a month.
