QUESTION

disinheritaning a family member

Asked on Mar 13th, 2014 on Civil Litigation - New Jersey
More details to this question:
Is it enough to state that you will not recognize someone as a family member to prevent them from getting your assets should you die? What if someone who is not a relative claims your inheritances prior to your death by way of lying about being next of kin or by stealing your identity? Can you do something about it? Can I put an ad in the newspaper stating that I won't pay for other people's bills or debts (on my own to keep them from attaching themselves to my assets)?

You need to write a proper will.  You should have an attorney assist you.  All of these questions can be answered by the attorney who prepares your estate plan.  The short answer to your questions, generally, is that you can disinherit anyone except a surviving spouse.
