QUESTION

Do I have a case against my University?

Asked on Dec 14th, 2011 on Civil Litigation - Virginia
More details to this question:
I was placed on Academic probation in the Spring of 2010 and decided to stop taking classes until I could focus on my education completely. I registered for 2 courses on 6/4/11 and was told all I needed to do was get better grades. No timeline was given. On 6/24/11 I quit my job as a probation officer to focus on school. I received an A & C for the summer semester and registered for 2 more courses. I received an A in the third course and then received a letter stating that I had been academically suspended and would only be allowed to continue studying if I switched to another degree program. After multiple emails and phone conversations I found that even if I would have received straight A''s I would still have been suspended and removed from the program. The university has admitted, in writing, that they did not give me the information I needed to make the appropriate decision but still will not allow me to stay in my desired program and will not give me money back for the 4 courses.

Your agreement with the University probably states that you, and it, will abide by a certain code of conduct. I would check to see what the school's rules/code of conduct says about academic probation. Once you find out what obligations the school had with respect to giving you notice and an opportunity to get off academic probation, it is difficult to tell whether you have a cause of action.
