QUESTION

Do I have an recourse at all?

Asked on Nov 06th, 2020 on Civil Litigation - Oklahoma
More details to this question:
I completed my bachelor’s degree in 2016, but am unable to obtain my diploma because the university will not release my transcript to anyone seeking it because of a balance due. The balance due is because of a mistake the financial aid office made by sending my financial aid back to the lender rather than apply it to tuition. They want me to be responsible for their mistake. The amount is $2500. I went two years without finding a permanent job and could not even apply for a teacher certification program so I could become a certified teacher because of this. I lost out on wages I could’ve been making etc. because of this. I wrote a letter to the president of the university to no avail. Is there anything I can do ?

You would sue the university to compel it to honor your contract by providing you with a diploma.  The university will claim that you breached the contract by not paying, you will argue that you fully performed, and that the university screwed up.  From whaq you've written, however, the breach occurred four years ago, and you may be beyond the statute of limitations, depending on which jurisdiction's laws apply.
