How do I consult with a civil lawyer?

Hi, I basically need to speak to a lawyer for about 30 minutes. I have been advised to consult with a civil lawyer regarding my relationship to someone who could be sued, to see if my assets are liable. I'm willing to pay to talk to someone, but no one is returning my calls . How do I find a lawyer to talk to? It has to be in New York State and the type of lawsuit I'm concerned about would be wrongful death, negligence, along those lines. I've never needed to find a lawyer before. Any help/advice would be appreciated!
