How do I defend myself when being sued for Defamation of Character?

More details to this question:
I found out someone who volunteered where I work lied about their credentials. I told several people about this lie. The person in question has since confirmed they do not have the credentials, and are planning to sue me for Defamation of Character. How do I defend myself?

Answer the case when served, or hire a lawyer to do so.  Ignore the threats.  If someone sues, there is nothing you can do to prevent it.  You can only deal with it by answering.
