QUESTION

How long can the police keep your car in impound?

Asked on Sep 04th, 2013 on Litigation - Georgia
More details to this question:
3 days ago, my dad was pulled over because our trunk looked open. Upon police inspection they found it was not. Our latch is just kinda unaligned, but it still closes and locks. Well the guy ended up asking daddy for his license which is suspended. They towed our car (our only car). We went to get it after the holiday weekend and they're saying it'll be 3 months before we can get it out! They said we have to pay $350 to bond it out like it's a person or something. Plus pay the towing fee. Then we have to go to court in Memphis which is an hour from my house because I live in Covington, TN. Mind you, we are sans car to go to Memphis. My mom has kidney cancer and goes to the doctor 3 times a week. My son has a heart defect requiring biweekly visits, I have school, and my husband has 2 jobs. Can they legally keep it that long? That's insanity!

Yes they can keep the car. Your dad was using it to commit a crime. (driving while license suspended). In some States they could forfeit it.
