QUESTION

Is it illegal to call someone by their first name?

Asked on Jan 13th, 2014 on Civil Litigation - Virginia
More details to this question:
I have had someone on a forum claiming they will be filing a lawsuit based solely on people calling him by his first name, and that all who have used his first name to address him on the forum are breaking the law. I am wondering if there is any actual basis for this. It seems he has put his name in the public domain by introducing himself by his name, and thinks people are stalking him because they know his name. This is more out of curiosity if there is any actual legal basis for him to sue over.

I cannot imagine that using someone's first correct first name is slanderous; perhaps if it's Osama, and he never uses it and goes by "Sam", but even then I think it would be an uphill climb to successfully sue.
