QUESTION

Is it legal to record a conversation in a public place?

Asked on May 14th, 2014 on Litigation - Michigan
More details to this question:
I previously made a statement to a person in a public place about a public official that I worked for in the past saying that the public official was a racist. I feel that the person I was with recorded that conversation and is going to use it against me. She even had me repeat the statement to her and a friend after she left the room and reentered. Is there a way that I can email her or text her stating that I made an error and due to my memory not being as good as it used to be, I named the wrong person (I want to retract the statement I made to her stating that I made it in error). This person that I feel recorded the conversation had me meet her in a public place after we were supposed to meet in private. I am a real estate agent and she wanted me to do an illegal act regarding the home she lives in. I just want to come up with something, anything to keep her from releasing the tape.

I think that someone who records a private conversation runs afoul of federal wiretapping laws. And blackmailing you with it is a felony in and of itself.
