QUESTION

Asked on Nov 11th, 2011 on Civil Litigation - Texas
More details to this question:
I work at a University were I teach. Recently, a student of mine got mad because of an assignment grade they received. The next day an email is sent out on the behalf of the students parent. This email alleges sexual harassment. Because of the nature of the email and the allegation, it has been circulated up the chain of command: Coordinator, Direction, and Dean. The student however, has now apologized and withdrawn such allegations. However, the damage has been done, my pedagogy and status has been compromised. Do I have a case of libel or slander?

Yes, you do.  This falls under defamation.  It seems like you can prove liability, and your next step is going to be proving damages.  Hope this helps.
