Need to get back my money from my fried

More details to this question:
My roommate borrowed $5500 from me 1 year ago and still keep saying will give you later. But i never get back single penny from him. he gave me echeck from one of the bank and it was bounced since he doesn't has balance on it. i have some email conversation, audio conversation & the echeck he gave me as proof. Will i get justification with these details? BTW we both are non-immigrant

As a practical matter you are not likely to see the $5,500.00 again and the expense of trying to sue and then collect will typically equal or exeed the amount in dispute.
