out-of-state defendant in small claims court?

More details to this question:
I am in New York, the small company I want to sue is based in San Francisco. They owe me $4825, so under the $5000 limit in NYC small claims court. They don't have an office here, but they have hired freelancers (including me) and they have an attorney based here. Can I serve the papers on the company's attorney?

You can serve them out of state.  However, a judgment here is likely hard to collect.
