QUESTION

School Arts Programs After School

Asked on Aug 02nd, 2019 on Civil Litigation - Tennessee
More details to this question:
I received a letter from one of my child's school teachers (for band class) in TN stating that they MUST attend band activities outside of school or they loose 25% of their grade. I didn't sign my child up for this program as we were asked at the end of the last school year and we said no to band. I feel this is wrong for a school to dictate to parents how they spend their what little family time they get outside of school and if they don't the child is punished with bad grades. My spouses job requires him to be on call 24/7 and we rarely see him. My only transportation is walking and I am not endangering the lives of my children to walk (most places are 6 lane highways) to get where these places are where this school expects parents to take their kids. I cannot drive as I have a medical condition that restricts that. Is this kind of thing the school is expecting/doing even legal?

Many private schools require the students to be involved in some sort of after school activity. If that is their policy, try to obtain an exemption. If they say no, then your child can either start the activity or your child can attend another school. The school has the right to set the requirements to be allowed to attend the school.
