QUESTION

What are my rights for splitting up possessions in an unmarried relationship?

Asked on Feb 08th, 2018 on Civil Litigation - New Jersey
More details to this question:
I have been in a relationship for over eight years that is coming to an end. I have a 13 year old child that lives with me but is not my partners. I have paid at least 90% of all bills in my name and partners. I do not own the furniture, appliances, etc. Are there any rights I have to any possessions in a breakup to not be left in an empty house. Including my child's bedroom furniture.? Or am I stuck with ending up paying all the bills and my ex partner leaves with every bit of the furniture, etc?

You don't have the same "rights" as you would with marriage. This is the downside of not getting married. If you don't agree on a division of property, you could sue for "Partition." Edward Zohn, Attorney at Law, 908.791.0312
