QUESTION

What can I do about my divorce case on court?

Asked on Feb 05th, 2014 on Litigation - Michigan
More details to this question:
I am going through a divorce in Fairfield Ohio, and live in Michigan. I am a disabled 54 y/o woman, having one leg and recently a liver transplant. When I got married we lived in Ohio. It takes 7 hrs to drive to Lancaster Ohio from Michigan, 14 hours total. I live off SS disability of $720.00 a month. It costs me approximately $400.00 to go to court, and back. When my husband left me in Ohio, I tried to get a lawyer however I could not get Legal Aid as I was not being physically abused. I tried every avenue to get help, going to legal clinics and talking to lawyers, however no one would take my case as I didn't have any money. And, the magistrate would not make my husband pay for a lawyer for me, she told me in a motion to sell/pawn my wedding/engagement ring. And I wouldn't get near enough money to pay for a lawyer, one guy offered me $500.00 and that was it. (Please bear in mind the court knows all the above, and below as I filled my own motions/paperwork). I tried to represent myself, and I thought that court meant getting to the truth, but my husband and his lawyer lied so much, and even thought I would point it out to the court, and filed contempt motions, the magistrate would not do anything, I got the impression the magistrate and his lawyer where friends, honestly it was ridiculous. Now, you need to understand, I was in the hospital 3 times over the separation, and almost lost my life due to liver failure, and I am very ill. But the magistrate still would not help me get a lawyer. I wrote to Ohio Supreme Court, in regards to this case, filed grievances, and they were all dismissed (I wasn't surprised). I went to court two times, paying $400.00 for the trip, and then not being able to pay my bills. The second time at court, seven witnesses that were properly subpoenaed did not show up (they were relatives of my ex). And in January 2014 I was suppose to go to court again, and I was so sick with liver failure I could not go.

There is very little you can do..Unfortunately in US CIVIL courts, like divorce court, you are entitled to the best attorney you can afford.. unless you can find one to do it pro bono. My question is why do you live in MI when he left you in Ohio? Why did you not get a divorce before you left?
